Video editing needs a lot of power even if you’re creating small home projects! Technology moves fast for software and hardware but both elements needs to be upgraded in order to have fast and quality results.
There are three main areas when it comes to digital video editing. First is the hardware you’re going to use, the software and the monitor.
For home use I would recommend:
- 3rd or 4th generation i5 Intel CPU.
- Memory should be at least 8GB DDR3 Dual Channel at 1333MHz with fast CAS 7 or at 1600MHz with CAS 9.
- Your hard disk drive should have enough space (1TB minimum) even if you choose to buy a normal 3.5″ hard disk drive or an SSD. Be careful, some Solid State Drives doesn’t support fast video editing. You can search for a fast one with good writing speed here. Another option for a hard disk drive is the WD Velociraptor at 10000RPM.
- Invest in a good Power Supply 650Watt and above that it is energy efficient. When you want to upgrade your VGA or add more hard disk drives, you won’t need to buy a new one.
- Buy a VGA card that it is fast, for example an nVidia GTX 700 Series model or AMD R9 200 Series.
For professional use I would recommend:
- 3rd or 4th generation i7 Intel CPU.
- Memory of 16 or 32GB Dual Channel at 1866Mhz or above.
- SSD Samsung EVO 840 at 1TB (2x parts) RAID 1.
- 850W Power Supply Energy efficient 80+

Everyone wants a big screen, even if it is for gaming, reading or video editing. I was looking for a good monitor with lots of PPI which this number is not showing always in the details / specifications. When it comes to screen sharpness and quality, you need a good number of PPI (Pixels per inch) like if you have heard the Retina in MacBook Pro latest version. This particular feature raises the screen resolution and creates high PPI density.
A normal FHD (Full high definition 1920×1080) 24″ monitor produces 91,79 pixels per inch rather than an UHD (Ultra high definition 3840×2160) 24″ monitor produces 183.58 PPI which is quite a difference!
FHD monitors are cheap and that’s because next generation UHD monitors are coming up! Here’s about how much deep you can reach inside your pocket and buy a product. It’s totally up to you. Buying a FHD monitor will do the job for you (from $150 to $300) but an UHD (from $500 to $2500) would do much better even if your projects require heavy equipment including UHD camcorders!
For home use you will need just one monitor but if you have several projects in mind you will need dual monitors. I would suggest buying the same type, size and brand.
