Paper receipts can be a hassle. First, there’s the issue of where to store them in the months following your purchase, in case you should need them. Then, when the time comes to dispose of them, you find yourself faced with fears of identity theft.
Simply tossing your receipts into the garbage is no longer an option. Now you have to find a way to shred or burn them to avoid someone else intercepting the information on them.
There has to be an easier way, especially in this digital age. Lemon.com allows you to scan your paper receipts with your iPhone, Android, Windows Phone, BlackBerry or Symbian so that you’ll always have them with you.
Better yet, Lemon.com’s interface will help you organize your finances and track your spending habits, using the information you scan.
Basic Plan is Free
You can download lemon free app and start scanning receipts immediately. The free plan includes unlimited receipt scans, with the option to add receipt information manually if you’d rather do it that way.
Once your receipts are scanned, you can assign labels to various types of spending. This will help the app calculate spending habits later. With Lemon.com’s free app, you’ll be able to capture the date, type of merchant, and amount spent. The app’s reporting summary reporting will tell you how much of your money is going to food, entertainment, travel, and more.
You won’t be limited to paper receipts, either. Lemon.com offers users an @lemon.com e-mail address to process all your online payment receipts, which will add your online spending information to your monthly totals. If you need your receipts to be easily accessible, you won’t have to worry about that, either. Lemon.com allows you to export your scanned receipts, as well as reporting information, anytime you want, which will let you print the information out if necessary. All of the reports are available for export to CSV file, allowing you to manage your reports in Excel.
This app meets the IRS’s requirements for receipt storage, with the free plan available permanently. You don’t even have to use a credit card to sign up for the free version. And if security is one of your concerns, you can rest easily knowing that Lemon app uses SSL encryption to store your receipt information where no one else can get to it.
Paid Family Plans
Upgrade to the family plan and you can add up to ten accounts to pool your information for creating family budgets and tracking your spending as a family. The family is $3 per month or only $20 per year. For $9 per month or $50 per year, you can upgrade to a plan that captures item-by-item details from your receipts, which will help you more easily track where every dollar is going.
Soon, Lemon free app will debut its business plan, taking the hassle out of creating business reports. Team members can upload business expenses, sharing automated reports with others in real time. For just $4 per month per user, your business can take advantage of this business plan once it’s available. Still aren’t sure if you want to upgrade? Try out the upgrade features for a small fee. All premium plans are completely ad-free.
Featured in the New York Times, USA Today, CNN/Money, and more, Lemon application is a truly revolutionary idea. However, some users have complained that their receipts have disappeared with various software upgrades.
Another user concern is that retailers won’t accept scanned receipts, but Lemon’s co-founder Wences Casares researched by asking three hundred merchants if they would accept the app’s receipts as proof of payment. Ninety-five percent responded that they would accept the scanned receipt. The other five percent would be fine with a printout of it.
As for the name, founders say it comes from the idea that users are taking lemons (paper receipts) and making lemonade from them (electronic receipts). Still, it might be best to hold onto your lemons a little longer, just in case Lemon.com suddenly erases them.
