Getting a Jetdrive installed on your Macbook is the perfect solution for storage space and performance problems. Not only you get a good amount of extra space (240/480/960 GB), the improvement in hard drive speed is also great. If you are a music producer like I am, then you will need more space than a 128GB or 256GB drive. So here is a quick Jetdrive Review.
If you are looking to upgrade your Macbook with a larger SSD, then the Transcend Jetdrive is one of the most feasible options in the market. The best part is that the guys at Transcend have made it very easy to install the drive with their upgrade kit. It comes in a strong packaged enclosure that contains all the tools you will need for the job. The instructions are given in an understandable manner and you will have no problem in getting your laptop hooked to the new SSD. First of all, here are a few common questions asked by people looking to get a Retina SSD upgrade.
Which MacBook models are upgradeable?
The JetDrive 500 is available in three different capacities 240GB / 480GB / 960GB and can be used with:
– Late 2010 to mid 2011 MacBook Air (11 inch and 13 inch).
The JetDrive 520 with:
– Mid 2012 MacBook Air (11 inch and 13 inch).
The JetDrive 720 with:
– Late 2012 to early 2013 Macbook Pro Retina (13 inch and 15 inch).
The JetDrive 725 with:
– Mid 2012 to early 2013 Macbook Pro Retina (13 inch and 15 inch).
Keep in mind that the JetDrive is a SATA III 6Gb/s model and it is a bit slower than the PCIe SSDs that are used in the latest Macbooks however the difference is not that of a big deal.
Is it easy to install?
Upgrading a MacBook is an absolute cinch with the easy installation method. Use the given screwdriver to slowly open the package and hook up the Transcend SSD with the help of a USB 3 cable. Then store your data from the computer hard drive into the new SSD. This is the time consuming part and can take up to 1.5 hours. After that you will need to flip your laptop over and remove the back cover. Take out the stock hard drive and replace it with the new one. Replace the stock drive into the Transcend enclosure. You can use this as an external hard drive now. That’s it! It’s as simple as that and it took me about 5 minutes to finish the hardware part of the process. See more in the video below.
How much does it cost?
The Jetdrive comes in three different capacities – 240 GB, 480 GB and 960 GB. Find pricing details on Amazon.com using the following links:
Though these upgrade kits are available with other manufacturers too, the Transcend prices are hard to beat.
Are these as fast as the original?
The READ speed ranges between 500 MB/s to 570 MB/s and the WRITE speed from 290 MB/s to 460 MB/s. We could say that these are normal speeds for a MacBook Air but maybe a little bit less than a Macbook Pro Retina. However, if you decide to buy the upgrade KIT after all, we don’t guarantee any improvements in speed.
What Customer are Saying?
